Claire van Hövell tot Westerflier
I am a Dutch-French born autodidact artist, mother and doctor, currently living in a small village in the middle of the Netherlands. My parents and brothers all combined an academic degree with varieties of creative work and hobbies, so art has always been part of my life.
Currently, I am training to become a reconstructive plastic surgeon. Growing up in different countries, I have always been fascinated by the impact of our appearance and looks on confidence, and the impact on a persons place in society. As a surgeon, I aspire to improve care for burn victims and children with congenital anomalies in low and middle income countries, for them to gain confidence and see how unique and beautiful they are.
My paintings and drawings force me to simplify the complexity of the human anatomy. In my work as a surgeon, I am forced to pay attention to every structure and small detail. In my work as an artist, I try to minimise the body and face into lines and shapes that still capture strong feelings, characteristics, and situations.
